Happy St. Patrick's Day, Sarah.
My Grandmother Sarah McEvoy was one of 13 children. She lived in a little town called Cloneslee in Ireland.
In 1924 she came to the United States on the S.S. Carpathia through Ellis Island with $25 in her pocket.
Half her siblings eventually came to the U.S. and half stayed in Ireland. She never returned to Ireland.
She panned for gold in the Southwest during the Depression.
She married someone who was more absent than present and as a result worked as a maid in the Barbizon Plaza Hotel in New York for many years.
She was the only grandparent I ever knew.
She bought me a clarinet when I was in 4th grade.
She was both a character and had character.
She has been gone more than 40 years.
Each St. Patrick's Day I lift a pint of Guinness to her. She reminds me what a heck of a country this can be.
Thanks.
What an interesting article. Don't know how I stumpled upon it, but I like it. Thanks
