Update on my feud with Budget Car Rental

A chronicle of my Budget saga so far.  It is Day 22 and still waiting for an apology or at least a call or anything.  

Any suggestions on what I should do with my FastBreak frequent renter card that arrived on Monday?

1. Called 800 number while on line to complain.  Was told they don't do complaints and was given "special" Customer Service number to call the next day.
2. Called Customer Service.  After call response roulette,  waited for 15 minutes and gave up.
3. Got a survey on email from Budget asking "how was my rental?" 
4. Looked on Budget corporate site for someone to contact to tell them how my rental was.  Only people with contact information was for the Manager, Public Relations and VP, Corporate Communications.  Contacted them directly via email (see my blog post for details).
5. Posted my blog post outlining my troubles on the Budget employee Facebook site.
6. Contacted the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Did get a nice sympathetic email back. 
7. Used the "contact us" form on the Budget site to send a brief note and a copy of my blog post.  Got a form back saying that my communication was important to them. 

  So.... still nothing... What next?

Marketers Need Metrics to Integrate Traditional and Digital Media

When it comes to integrating digital and traditional media, vital to marketing success today, conflicting views abound. Too many marketers feel as though they are working in the dark.  According to a joint study by the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s) and the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), only 7% of US marketers were very satisfied with their progress integrating online and traditional media.   Fully 52% of the respondents were only somewhat satisfied, and 31% were dissatisfied to at least some degree.

How peer networks will drive future IT decisions

What Goes on Facebook? What Goes on Twitter? What Goes on my Blog?

One of Seth Godin's posts a while back, Personal Branding in the Age of Google, struck a number of chords with me.  First, it reminded me of how ubiquitous and powerful search has becoming, dramatically changing the nature of information management -- and the expectations of end users for what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to usability.  It also gave me an opportunity to forward Seth's post to my kids, with whom I have had the "if it's electronic it last forever" conversation about beer pong pictures on Facebook many times.  But parental "I told you so's" are always enjoyable.

But Seth's post also got me thinking about how the rules of "polite" communication (If such a thing exists) have gotten garbled and confused in the Facebook and social networking era. 

I signed on to Facebook very early after they started allowing public accounts.  Early on, there were few of us non student types on Facebook and I was grateful to find ANYONE to join my friends list, no matter how far removed they were from actual friendship.  But now many of my colleagues from AIIM are on Facebook. People from church are on Facebook.  For heavens sake, my brothers and sisters are on Facebook.  Long lost friends from Ramapo High School and William & Mary are on Facebook.  My Mom is making noises about getting on Facebook. 

So the question arises... what kinds of communication belong where? 

I find myself drifting toward a strategy in which I use Facebook for personal networking and Twitter and my blog and Linked In and InformationZen for professional networking.  Not a hard and fast decision or split, but more of a gradual progression.  I know that in this era of content and identity transparency you can't keep things "hidden" and the need for authenticity trumps almost everything -- it's more a matter of trying to think about what types of content are relevant to which audiences and having a little bit of discipline about what goes where.

I worry a bit about turning off some of the purely professional connections on Facebook (will they get notified?  will their feelings be hurt?) but figure this is a small trade off for no longer subjecting them to my admittedly odd and self-indulgent posts about 24 and Amazing Race and Biggest Loser, not to mention some of my family's odd humor preoccupations.  On the flip side, my sister Jennifer will be glad to no longer have to read my status posts on Facebook auto-posted from Twitter that lead her to say, "I have no idea what any of your status posts mean."

Pay it Green Alliance

Came across an interesting concept sponsored by the NACHA folks -- the Pay It Green Alliance.

The idea?  The PayItGreen Alliance is a coalition of financial services companies, led by NACHA, that is committed to educating consumers and businesses about the positive environmental impact of choosing electronic payments, bills, and statements instead of paper.  The PayItGreen Alliance encourages consumers to turn off the paper in their financial lives - specifically, to use Direct Deposit, receive bills and financial statements electronically, and make payments electronically.

How do electronic payments benefit the environment?

Switching to electronic payments would make a big environmental impact. Every year, paper checks use more than 674 million gallons of fuel and add more than 3.6 million tons of greenhouse gases to the environment. This amount includes the cost to cut, transport and mill paper; fuels used to cut, transport and mill paper; printing and delivering boxes of checks to consumers; and taking, clearing, and settling check payments, as well as returning checks to consumers in monthly account statements.

How do electronic bills and statements benefit the environment?

In 2006, 19 billion bills - 533 million pounds of paper - were delivered to American households [U.S. Postal Service]. It requires an estimated 235 million gallons of fossil fuels to transport this much paper, resulting in more than 1.3 million tons of CO2 emissions [Dove Consulting, December 2007].
